The Mausoleo di Cecilia Metella e Castrum Caetani is a majestic Roman funerary monument and medieval fortress complex on the Appian Way. Built between 30–10 BC to honor noblewoman Cecilia Metella, the cylindrical travertine tomb sits atop a square podium and features an ornate marble frieze with ox skulls (“Capo di Bove”). In the 14th century, the Caetani family added crenellations, a palace, church, and defensive walls, transforming it into a castle. Visitors can explore the ancient sepulchral chamber, medieval rooms, and the on-site Appia Museum showcasing sculptures, sarcophagi, inscriptions, and other relics from the historic route.
