In the shadow of London's Canary Wharf: A Self-Guided Tour

This self-guided walking tour takes you through the fascinating history of Canary Wharf, one of the largest urban regeneration projects in Europe. Once a bustling dock that played a crucial role in making London the commercial centre of the world, this area experienced a dramatic decline before being reborn as a gleaming financial district. Starting at Westferry Circus and ending near Canary Wharf Underground Station, you'll discover how this remarkable metamorphosis occurred and consider who truly benefited from the change. Your guide will take you through the history of the Isle of Dogs, from its origins as marshland to becoming the world's busiest port, through wartime destruction, industrial collapse, and finally its controversial rebirth as Canary Wharf. You'll walk along historic quaysides where ships once unloaded cargoes from around the world, pass through the underground town, and admire Britain's first skyscraper.
