Visit the Basilica Cistern, a massive underground water storage facility built in the 4th century and expanded in 532 AD. As you descend the 52 stone steps into the cistern, you'll be surrounded by a firebrick wall with a thickness of 4 meters, coated with a waterproofing mortar.
The cistern is an engineering marvel, storing up to 80,000 cubic meters of water, delivered via 20 kilometers of aqueducts from a reservoir near the Black Sea.
As you explore the cistern, you'll learn about the fascinating history of this ancient water storage facility, built during the reign of Emperor Justinian I in 532 AD.
