Make your own way to the Cape Bruny Lighthouse for your tour. After an introduction from your guide, climb the wrought iron spiral staircase to the tower balcony. The lighthouse dates back to 1836 and stands 374 feet (114 meters) high. It is the only lighthouse that is open to the public in southern Tasmania. From there, take in sweeping views of the Tasman Sea, South East Cape, Whale Head and small islands that dot the coast. Get great photo ops in every direction, and keep an eye out for albatross, gannets and many other seabirds. You might see short-tailed shearwaters and wedge-tailed eagles swooping close to the tower, and further out on the ocean you can catch sight of migrating whales (depending on the season). View the superbly engineered light prisms up close, and hear about the history of the convict-built lighthouse, and the lighthouse keepers that worked in this remote locale. Hear firsthand stories from your guide about living at a lighthouse and some of the last light keepers in Australia.
