In Roman time, it was the 14th region of Rome, Transtiberim, which included the Janiculum hill and the Vatican which was kept outside the wall boundary. Thanks to the loop in the river and the great availability of water, many crafts, such as leather curing, were practiced. The area was full of mills, baths, fields, and temples, and the ample spaces available allowed buildings development with numerous public housing constructions. Tradition indicates that it was in one of these homes that Cecilia lived on its foundation that the Basilica was built.
