Established in 2001, the park is dominated by the Snæfellsjökull volcano, topped by a glacier and famously featured in Jules Verne's *Journey to the Center of the Earth*. The park includes rugged coastlines, lava fields, and diverse flora and fauna, offering hiking trails and breathtaking views. It also contains cultural and historical sites, such as ancient fishing villages and Viking settlements, making it a popular destination for nature and history enthusiasts.

See the black sand beach Djúpalónssandur with it's rich history. Once a popular area for fishing, the sea is now empty as boats have moved elsewhere. All that remains is the wreckage of a British trawler on the black sands, and several 'lifting stones'. These lifting stones would have been used to test the strength of potential fishermen and now you can try and see if you would have made the cut too!
