Cape Town

Cape Town is one of the most historically rich and culturally diverse cities in Africa. Castle of Good Hope

• The Castle of Good Hope, located in central Cape Town, is the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa, completed in 1679 by the Dutch East India Company (VOC). It was built to replace a smaller wooden fort constructed in 1652 by Jan van Riebeeck, the Dutch commander who established a supply station at the Cape for passing ships traveling between Europe and the East Indies.

Its original purpose was purely practical: to grow fresh fruits and vegetables to supply passing ships traveling between Europe and Asia, helping prevent scurvy among sailors.
• Located in the center of Cape Town, the garden was a vital part of the VOC’s refreshment station and quickly expanded into a large and productive area, complete with orchards, vineyards, and livestock pens. It laid the foundation for permanent European settlement in the region.
