What you'll do
Join a Cape Malay/Creole cooking class and local shopping experience in Salt River.
Tour Highlight
Join us for a leisurely stroll through Salt River to shop for ingredients and admire local street art, followed by cooking a Cape Malay meal from scratch! This 3-4 hour experience requires no prior cooking knowledge - just an interest in the culinary heritage of Cape Malay/Creole people. Your level of involvement is flexible, depending on your time and energy. We can cook everything from scratch or guide you through key parts of the process. By default, guests roll out traditional rotis, prepare Onion and Tomato Sambal, and explore the history of the spice and slave trade in South Africa. While cooking, you'll learn about the socio-cultural identity of the Cape Muslim community, one of the most diverse Creole communities in the world. You'll enjoy a three-course meal with welcome drinks and snacks. Afterward, share the meal with home cooks from Salt River/Woodstock. This is an ideal activity for food and history lovers seeking a genuine connection with Cape Malay culinary culture.
